Internet Safety with DNS

Date
Body

The Domain Name System (DNS) is an integral part of the Internet and of the World Wide Web. It’s like a massive telephone book (if you remember such things!) that translates domain names such as Google.com, USBank.com, and Wikipedia.org into the site’s actual numeric address on the Internet.  Without DNS, we’d have to type web addresses such as 198.35.26.96 into our browsers instead of memorable names such Wikipedia.org.

Given that DNS is crucial to the use of the Internet and the  World Wide Web, what if someone hacked the Domain Name System and redirected names such as USBank.com to their own servers? For starters, they could collect the login information of every online customer and use that information to steal the money from the real USBank.com.

On the other hand, what if someone provided alternate DNS servers which would translate good domains correctly, and *not* translate requests to bad domains at all? We would instantly be protected from known scammers, malware sites, porn sites, etc. because the good DNS servers wouldn’t send our web browsers there!

Connect in to the September OCCA meeting on the last Tuesday of the month to learn various ways to use DNS to keep yourself, your family, your company, and your clients safer in everything they do on the Internet.

Tools we install for our clients to use:

For example: What PDF viewer do you install on client machines? How about a heat monitor, browser, browser extensions, DNS service and any other software or service you normally put on client machines.

Tools we install on client machines for us to use in maintaining their machines

Windows privacy manager, Startup monitor, Drive health viewer, or …

What tools do we use for ourselves?

Tools like, writing aids, note taking and syncing, clipboard manager, screen capture, Parted Magic, Data recovery tools? Password recovery tools? or …

Using Synology NAS devices

Date
Body

Network Attached Storage (NAS) has come a long way from the days of simply being RAID in a box, and we’re going to take a look at the future of NAS. Jeff Dugan, a Technical Account Manager from Synology, will spend some time focusing on the variety of ways you can provide services to both home and office users, discuss how to get the most out of your IT infrastructure, and dive into some of the best practices for integrating Synology into your hybrid environments.

Virtual meeting on Virtual Machines

Date
Body

We will have a virtual discussion of various virtual machine options including (but not limited to): VirtualBox, VMWare, VMWareFusion, Parallels, and Hyper-V. To the extent possible, various members will demonstrate  their installed option and how they use it and set it up.

We will try to cover at least these issues:

  • Which ones do we use and how for ourselves. Pros and cons of various options.
  • Which ones do we use and for what purpose for our clients.
  • Are we planning to add one soon?
  • Hardware and software requirements
  • Price
  • How do the possibility of Virtual machines change our recommendations and/or sales of hardware? Are we suggesting or getting more RAM or larger drives because we expect to use Virtual machines?

You Can Build a Website for Your Clients!

Date
Body

There are numerous ways to build a website.  You can create your own from scratch with HTML/JavaScript/CSS, use templates provided by your web host, or even write one with a back-end programming language--new web building tools come out all the time!  After a brief list of the pros and cons of these technologies, we will show how using a CMS (Content Management System) may be your best choice. A CMS allows you quickly stand up a website without much knowledge of the underlying technology and give your client a tool for which they could later expand upon as their business needs grow and change.

Drupal is the leading open-source CMS used by thousands of organizations around the world including governments, large media companies, many universities, and a plethora of businesses. Many web hosting companies provide quick-install tools to get you up to speed on Drupal within minutes but it can also be installed by simply uploading a file and running a script. You can customize the look and feel with hundreds of themes or extend the functionality with thousands of modules. And since it's open source, you can get in and tweak anything you need--or hire a Drupal developer (which are easy to find) to make those modifications for you.

Tonight, we will use Drupal to setup a full-featured, configurable, expandable website in less than 30 minutes.  Many of the same principles can be applied to other packages such as WordPress or Joomla so if you are already invested in another CMS, come learn and compare!

Cyber Liability - Errors and Omissions

Date
Body

In keeping with the needs of our membership, this month we are focusing on YOUR business needs instead of your clients. If you sell or service hardware or software, then other businesses depend on you, and we live in a litigious society.

Can you be sued if a backup fails? Can you make a recommendation that turns out to cost you your livelihood ?

What exactly is a consultant liable for, and how can they protect themselves?

Cyber liability is becoming ever more important, and so is having errors and omissions insurance. Find out everything you need to know and then some about this growing concern. We are bringing in a specialist not to scare you into buying insurance, (although that may happen) but to meet the needs of local consultants.
